7 things to do when your feeling run down.

The past two weeks have been challenging for me, for different reasons.

Week one was me being run down. Catching a cold and needing to rest and nourish.

Week two was me going through growth, updating to the newest version of me and needing to rest and nourish.

I know I got to week one because I was putting pressure on myself to do more than I my body wanted to. I was letting stress creep in and I was becoming unorganised in my busyness. We had take away food – 3 times in one week!

So what do I do in those situations?

Here are my 7 things to do when I get run down.

  1. Stop exercising, I still move through the day, some stretches here and there but I sleep a lot more and give my body the rest it needs. I usually only get sick when I’m run down, which means I was trying to do too much.
  2. Homemade stock (or bone broth) and miso soup. I make a big batch of broth and I drink it everyday and then when I can I also use it to make miso. Nourishing for the body and grounding for the soul.
  3. Visit the naturopath. – I don’t take paracetamol or cold tablets, I visit the naturopath and get a custom made herbal remedy to boost my immune system. Most people didn’t know I had a cold, because this stuff works with your body so it’s ultra effective.
  4. Nourishing food – this means no dairy, gluten or sugary foods. This means lots of cooked vegetables (in broth) and foods that boost my immune system like berries and citrus and warming foods.
  5. Walk in nature – if you can find sunshine get some, the benefits are amazing, a gentle walk in nature can revitalise you, just make sure you listen to your body and don’t push yourself too far.
  6. Drink lots of water – yep even if you think you drink a lot of water (like I do) drink even more, herbal teas are good to, I love lemon and honey added to my herbal teas to soothe my throat.
  7. Rest – get as much sleep as possible, I was going to bed at 9:00 every night I think one night I went to bed at 8:00pm when my son did, I slept longer in the morning, I rested on the couch when I got home from work. I took a day off work to get even more rest. You have got to invest in your recovery a day off work is worth the extra rest you can get.

When you get sick it’s a sign from your body that you haven’t been looking after yourself, whether it’s not eating right, working to hard, getting stressed, or just simply trying to be a superhero and doing to much.

Take note when you get sick, do what you can for a speedy recovery and then make sure you don’t repeat the same behaviour to avoid being back there again. i’m scheduling my time more effectively and listening to my body when it needs a rest. It is simple really if you are aware of it,
