7 Signs Your Body Is Asking You to Slow Down

7 Signs Your Body Is Asking You to Slow Down

Our bodies are incredibly good at communicating with us.

The problem is, most of us have become very good at ignoring the messages.

We push through the tiredness.

We brush off the headaches.

We tell ourselves we’ll rest when everything is finished.

Eventually, those little whispers become louder.

If you’ve been feeling “not quite yourself” lately, your body might be asking for more support.

Here are seven common signs I see in the women I work with.

1. You’re eating because you’re exhausted, not because you’re hungry

Have you ever stood in front of the pantry wondering what to eat, even though nothing really appeals?

Or found yourself ordering takeaway simply because you couldn’t face making one more decision?

Sometimes this isn’t about food.

It’s decision fatigue.

When your brain has been making hundreds of decisions all day, choosing dinner can feel overwhelming.

2. Your digestion feels different

Stress doesn’t just affect your mind.

It affects your gut too.

When we’re under ongoing stress, digestion can slow down or become disrupted, contributing to symptoms like bloating, constipation or changes in bowel habits.

Your gut and your brain are constantly communicating with each other.

3. You seem to catch every little bug

Chronic stress doesn’t directly “cause” colds, but it can affect your immune system and make it harder for your body to recover.

If you constantly feel run down, it’s worth asking whether your body has been getting enough rest, nourishing food and recovery time.

4. Your sleep has changed

You feel exhausted…

Yet you can’t switch off.

You wake during the night.

Or your mind starts planning tomorrow the moment your head hits the pillow.

Stress, hormones, light exposure and daily habits can all influence sleep, particularly during perimenopause.

5. You can’t concentrate

Someone is talking to you…

…but you’re already thinking about the next five things on your to-do list.

Mental overload makes it much harder to stay present, remember information and make decisions.

It’s not a sign that you’re failing.

It’s often a sign your brain needs a break.

6. You’re cancelling plans you were looking forward to

Sometimes we say no because we’re honouring our boundaries.

Other times, we say no because we’re completely depleted.

If you’re regularly avoiding things you normally enjoy, it might be worth checking in with how you’re really feeling.

7. You keep reaching for your phone

Scrolling isn’t always about social media.

Sometimes it’s an escape.

A way to avoid making another decision.

A way to numb out for a while.

The question isn’t,

“Why am I scrolling?”

The question is,

“What am I trying to escape from?”

Your body isn’t working against you

One of the biggest mindset shifts I help women make is this:

Your body isn’t trying to make your life difficult.

It’s trying to get your attention.

The headaches.

The exhaustion.

The cravings.

The brain fog.

The disrupted sleep.

They’re not signs that you’re failing.

They’re invitations to pause and ask:

What do I need right now?

Because the sooner we listen to the whispers, the less likely our bodies are to shout.

A gentle reminder:

You don’t need to wait until you’re completely burnt out before looking after yourself.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is slow down before your body forces you to.

If several of these signs sound familiar, you might find my free Overwhelm RESET Booklet helpful. It’s designed to help you recognise the early signs of overwhelm and gives you simple, practical ways to support your nervous system before burnout takes hold.
