Forget New Year’s Resolutions. Try This Instead.

Forget New Year’s Resolutions. Try This Instead.

Every January, we’re surrounded by messages telling us it’s time to become a new person.

Lose weight.

Get organised.

Wake up at 5 am.

Be more productive.

Finally “fix” yourself.

But what if you don’t need fixing?

What if you simply need a clearer understanding of what matters most?

Goals aren’t the problem

I love having something to work towards.

Goals can give us direction, purpose and motivation.

The problem isn’t setting goals.

It’s believing that we have to change everything at once.

That’s usually why New Year’s resolutions don’t last.

They’re often built on pressure, guilt or the idea that we’re not enough as we are.

Start with intention instead

Before setting goals, ask yourself:

How do I want this year to feel?

Calmer?

Healthier?

More connected?

More adventurous?

More intentional?

When you know how you want your life to feel, your goals become much easier to choose.

Focus on who you’re becoming

Instead of asking,

“What do I want to achieve?”

Try asking:

  • Who do I want to become?
  • What habits would support that person?
  • What invisible rules am I ready to leave behind?
  • What would help me feel more like myself?

Those questions create goals that are sustainable because they’re connected to your values, not just your achievements.

Think smaller

One of the biggest mistakes we make in January is trying to change our entire lives in one week.

Real change rarely works that way.

Choose one or two habits.

Protect them.

Repeat them.

Allow them to become part of who you are.

Small actions, practised consistently, create remarkable change over time.

A different kind of resolution

If I were choosing one intention for the year, it wouldn’t be to become a better version of myself.

It would simply be this:

Become more curious.

Curious about my patterns.

Curious about my choices.

Curious about what helps me feel healthy, connected and alive.

Because curiosity leads to awareness.

Awareness creates choice.

And choice is where lasting change begins.

One question to begin the year

Instead of asking,

“What’s my New Year’s resolution?”

Ask yourself:

“What small choice could I make consistently that my future self would thank me for?”

Then begin there.

You don’t need a perfect plan.

You just need the next step.

And remember…

A meaningful life isn’t created by one big resolution.

It’s created by thousands of small choices that align with who you want to become.
